TRB Standing Committee on Impairment in Transportation


This committee is concerned with impairment by alcohol and other drugs, as well as other forms of impairment, as they relate to all significant modes of transportation with particular emphasis on those relationships that are common to more than one mode. A summary of the Committee's past activities and plans for the future can be found in the triennial strategic plan and the centennial paper on the history of impaired driving and the role of the committee.

Committee Membership

Membership requires a formal process; however, participation in committee activities is not limited to members. Volunteer to serve as a reviewer of research papers, to work on a committee project, or to give a presentation or preside at a session of the TRB Annual Meeting. Active participants who are not members are called “friends” of a committee. Chairs look at the list of active “friends” when an opportunity for membership arise.

Become a Friend of the Committee

A “friend of a committee” is someone who can attend committee meetings and generally participate in the same activities as committee members. In addition, friends who actively contribute to committee activities may be considered for membership. Examples of committee activities include:

You may self-nominate as a friend by logging into MyTRB. Then click on "My Activities" and select "Manage Committee Friendships." Select the committee code ACS50 on the list, check the box to become a friend, and submit changes.
